Enterprise Vault is Symantec’s award-winning archive and content discovery solution. The new NetBackup for Enterprise Vault agent greatly simplifies data protection of Enterprise Vault environments. It provides customers with comprehensive backup protection for Enterprise Vault directory databases, partitions, vault stores and indexes This new agent will automatically discover the various servers and components within your Enterprise Vault environment that need protection (partitions and their associated databases). Because the agent leverages snapshot technology, Enterprise Vault is in read-only backup-mode for the shortest time possible: just long enough to complete a snapshot. This backup of the snapshot is coordinated with Enterprise Vault via the agent; no scripts or manipulating registry settings. The agent supports:
- Disaster recovery of a partition and databases.
- Recovery of individual files within a partition
- Enterprise Vault 7.5 environments
- Veritas NetBackup Vault

Details about the disk configuration and TCP/IP settings are automatically recorded and updated during every scheduled backup, ensuring recovery to the precise pre-failure state of all system configurations.
- Dissimilar System Restore—Integrated feature enables recovery to target Windows systems with completely different hardware configurations.
- Veritas NetBackup Desktop and Laptop Option
The Veritas NetBackup Desktop and Laptop Option provides continuous disk-based protection and synchronization for users that are in the office or on the road. It automatically copies user data to existing network shares or storage enabling quick recovery or synchronization of data by the administrator or the user in the event of data loss.
- Veritas NetBackup Encryption Options
Physical security of backup tapes is essential for any business. If tapes are somehow lost or stolen, data must not be accessible without the proper authority. NetBackup allows administrators to centrally manage and track the encryption of backup data from within the NetBackup policy. By using software as the controller of encryption, rather than hardware, administrators gain a heterogeneous security option that allows them to encrypt and decrypt data regardless of the hardware platform used for backup or recovery.
NetBackup Client Encryption Option
Client encryption is now standard with every NetBackup client. This feature encrypts data during the backup process using a keyfile created by an administrator with a pass-phrase. Data remains encrypted while in transit and on the target media. On restores, the encrypted data is read from media and transferred across the network to the client where the the keyfile is used to decrypt the data.
NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option
Ensure that tapes being transported offsite cannot be read in the event they are lost, mishandled, or stolen. MSEO provides maximum flexibility and performance by providing parallelized and selectable encryption and compression and "set it and forget it" key management. Some key benefits include:
- Easier management and control. Encrypt within the Veritas NetBackup policy, eliminating a separate process or an extra dedicated device to manage.
- Maximum flexibility. Choose what data you want to encrypt and then choose the appropriate compression and encryption strength (AES 128-bit or AES 256-bit).
- Support for most common backup configurations. Includes support for disk staging to tape, the creation of tape copies for offsite purposes, and the backup of NAS devices (via NDMP).
- Veritas NetBackup Flexible Disk Option
This option enables you to use commodity attached disk (direct-attached storage [DAS], SAN, NAS) for open, shared, high-speed backup and recovery. For additional performance, you can share disk in a SAN for the ultimate disk-based backup solution (utilizing the new Veritas NetBackup SAN client). Some key benefits include:
- Reduced disk cost. All the features of backup appliances (e.g., VTLs) leveraging commodity disk and servers are built into Veritas NetBackup.
- Faster backups and restores. Avoid slow LAN backups and restores and take advantage of high-speed backup to disk over the SAN.
- Better disk utilization. Disk is shared between multiple media servers, allowing for higher utilization.
- Veritas NetBackup for Microsoft Hyper-V
The new NetBackup for Microsoft Hyper-V supports an unlimited number of virtual guests running on a Windows Server machine. It can quickly restore virtual machines, individual virtual files and folders from a single image-level backup - without the need for a second file level backup -- thereby reducing storage and server requirements by as much as 50 percent. One backup console that provides affordable data protection across both Microsoft virtual and physical environments.
- Instant recovery of individual files and folders, and virtual machines
- Minimize disruption to virtual machines with snapshot protection
- Automate discovery of virtual machines, including those not currently protected by NetBackup
- Leverage client-side deduplication available via PureDisk
- Veritas NetBackup Open Storage Option
Increase control and flexibility when you backup data to intelligent disk appliances that use the Veritas NetBackup Open Storage API. Veritas NetBackup can manage the backup through these devices and also takes advantage of the unique capabilities of each device, such as deduplication and replication. The Symantec Technology Enabled Program (STEP) partners for the OpenStorage Option are Copan, Data Domain, Diligent, EMC, FalconStor, Network Appliance, Quantum, Sepaton, and Sun.
- Fully leveraged intelligent disk appliances. Take advantage of high-speed backup and recovery over a Fibre Channel or IP connection, along with disk sharing, virtualization, and deduplication technologies.
- Enhanced disaster recovery. Fully leverage advanced features such as backup image replication between multiple data centers, eliminating the need to ship, encrypt, or store tapes.
- Integrated solutions. Natively integrate intelligent disk appliances with Veritas NetBackup to deliver a seamless solution with additional functionality.
- Veritas NetBackup Shared Storage Option
Veritas NetBackup Shared Storage Option (SSO) is the first heterogeneous SAN-ready storage solution running on UNIX, Windows, and Linux. It enables dynamic sharing of individual tape drives by "virtualizing" tape resources. SSO allows you to leverage your environment's hardware resources and to maximize utilization and reduce overall IT costs. Veritas NetBackup Shared Storage Option reduces overall costs by providing better hardware utilization and optimization of resources during backup and recovery operations. Graphical wizards help you quickly discover and configure shared resources for rapid deployment.
- Minimizes Backup Costs—Increase tape drive utilization by lowering the number of total drives required.
- Reduces Backup and Recovery Time—NetBackup Shared Storage Option software's more efficient use of tape drives means a significant reduction in the elapsed time of backup and recovery operations.
- Increase Network Performance—Leverage the benefits of a dedicated storage network by removing the backup traffic from the LAN.
- NEW—Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) support enables sharing between NAS systems and NetBackup Servers.
- NEW—Increased redundancy with support for multiple paths to tape drives.
- Veritas NetBackup for VMware
VMware virtual infrastructure software is used by enterprises large and small to increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their IT operations. Considered by Gartner to be a "mega-trend", VMware is making its way into datacenters of every size. Recognizing this trend, NetBackup 6.5 delivers significant features for VMware.
- NetBackup for VMware - Part of the new NetBackup 6.5 Snapshot Client, NetBackup for VMware provides an alternate client backup technology for virtual machines with enhanced granular recover capabilities. Based on VMware's Consolidated Backup off-host data protection technology, NetBackup 6.5 builds on and significantly enhances VMware's approach by providing two restore capabilities from one backup.
- PureDisk for VMware - Utilizes PureDisk's block level data-deduplication technology to efficiently backup virtual machines. PureDisk for VMware is easily implemented by placing a PureDisk client inside the virtual machine and backing up to the PureDisk server.
